The remains were discovered by local YouTuber AJ Wysopal while he was livestreaming an amateur search effort connected to the Nancy Guthrie case. Wysopal reportedly noticed an exposed human bone protruding from the ground in a dry riverbed less than five miles from Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson, Arizona.
The discovery immediately triggered concern that the remains could be connected to the high-profile missing persons case.

Experts believe the remains may belong to the ancient Hohokam people, an Indigenous civilization considered ancestors of modern Native American tribes in Arizona.

The anthropologist also explained that Arizona authorities regularly encounter both archaeological discoveries and modern human remains in remote desert areas, particularly near migration routes close to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Remains Transferred to Native American Tribe
After experts completed their preliminary examination, the remains were reportedly transferred to the Tohono O’odham Nation, a federally recognized Native American tribe with deep historical ties to southern Arizona.
Watson said no further scientific testing is currently expected because the remains are believed to be part of a prehistoric burial rather than a criminal investigation.
